Kampos Vourlioton is the coastal settlement below the mountain village of Vourliotes, on the main road between Agios Konstantinos and Avlakia, roughly 19 km from Samos Town. The two are separate settlements and should not be confused: Vourliotes sits at 350 m on the slopes of Ampelos, Kampos lies at sea level about 4 km below it, on a long pebble bay. The area was the shipping point for the Samian wine trade and the old stone stores and rock-cut wine presses are still visible along the shore, some of them now in the water — the island’s official wine route passes through here. Above the modern settlement lies the older quarter of Palaiochori, at whose upper edge stands the seventeenth-century Byzantine chapel of Osia Matrona of Chios, built by Chiot settlers and still holding eighteenth-century frescoes. Stock is holiday houses, small blocks and plots behind the beach, with older stone dwellings for restoration in Palaiochori. Unlike Vourliotes, Kampos is not a designated traditional settlement, so the coastal setback line and the Samos ZOE zoning are what govern here — and because the Byzantine remains of Svala, Lazaros and Louloudas lie in the surrounding hills, we establish whether the archaeological service has a say over a plot before it is offered.
